Scott Redding mastered the blustery conditions at Silverstone this afternoon to finish the day second fastest ahead of his home Grand Prix. The gusting winds blowing across the flat Silverstone circuit caused problems for Mika Kallio, who finished the second free practice session in 13th position.

This morning's opening free practice session was held in typically British summer weather, with a sudden shower ahead of the session leaving the track damp. A dry line appeared as the session progressed, with Redding and Kallio taking advantage of the improving conditions to post the fourth and fifth fastest times respectively.

The sun shone for the second free practice session this afternoon, but strong and unpredictable winds caused problems for all the riders, on a circuit that is almost completely flat and provides no shelter from the elements. The wind had less effect on Redding, one of the heavier Moto2 riders on the grid, but the same wasn't true of Kallio who, at just 58kg, is significantly lighter than his Marc VDS teammate.

Redding eventually went onto post the second fastest time this afternoon, just over 0.5s off leader Pol Espargaro, while Kallio was nearly two seconds off the pace in 13th position.

The weather forecast is for better conditions tomorrow afternoon for qualifying, in which both Marc VDS riders are targeting a position on the front two rows of the grid for Sunday's Hertz British Grand Prix.

“This morning it was wet at the start of the session, but with no rain it dried out as the session progressed, which made it difficult to find a good rhythm. It was an okay session though. This afternoon was much better, although the wind was a bit of an issue. It wasn't a big problem, but on some laps it was okay and on others it would lift you up in the turns and push you wide on the exit. It just meant that instead of planning a fast lap you had to take them when you could, when the wind was not so strong. In the end I just chipped away at the times with each lap, improving a little bit here and a little bit there and, eventually, it all came together. We still need to find a little more tomorrow, but I'm happy with the job we did today.”

“The wind was a real problem this afternoon. In four or five corners it would get under the bike and make the front go light, pushing you wide on corner exit. It affected everyone, but it was worse for the lighter riders. We made a change to the bike to counter this problem but this then caused us even bigger problems in other areas. Overall my feeling with the bike wasn't what it should have been and we're too far off the frontrunners, so we need to make some changes for tomorrow, but we won't know exactly what we need to change until we've had a look through the data tonight.”

“Conditions haven't been ideal today, with the rain this morning and the wind this afternoon, but I'm happy with what we've achieved today. Scott was consistently fast this afternoon, improving with almost every lap and eventually finishing the day second fastest overall. He seems very confident in the bike, and he likes this old style circuit, so I'm sure he'll improve further tomorrow and will be pushing for the front row in qualifying. Mika had some issues with the wind today, which made the bike feel a bit too flighty for his liking. We have some ideas on how to improve things should the wind continue into tomorrow, so I'm confident he'll also be looking at the front two rows in qualifying tomorrow.”
