For the third time in the last four races, Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS rider Alex Márquez will start from pole position after a record-breaking performance in Silverstone, with Xavi Vierge charging to a superb second row slot.

• Gloriously sunny conditions combined with Silverstone’s new asphalt provide the platform for a record-breaking day of Moto2 action at the historic 5.9km British venue today.
• Márquez showed blistering speed in Q2 to take his 12th career pole position with the fastest ever Moto2 lap at Silverstone, while Vierge advanced out of tough FP3 to fight his way into the top six on the grid.

Alex Márquez: 1st, 2:04.374, 23 laps, 136 km.

• Márquez ensured he finished every practice session inside the top six with a lap of 2:04.787 placing him fifth at the end of a tight FP3 that saw 19 riders split by 0.9s.
• With temperatures soaring close to 30 degrees for Q2, Márquez powered to a sensational lap of 2:04.374 that put him top of an all-Spanish front row that also included Jorge Navarro and Augusto Fernandez.
• That incredible pace was two seconds inside the previous best pole lap set in 2015 by Sam Lowes and it secured Márquez his ninth pole position in Moto2

“I have good pace and I’m confident I can fight for the victory tomorrow”

“I wasn’t sure what the best lap times were so I just decided to focus on myself and keep pushing as hard as I could. When I made a 2:04.6 I knew it was a very fast lap time but probably not enough for pole position. I pushed hard again to my maximum and then saw a 2:04.3 and I thought that was at least going to be on the front, so I was already happy. It was hard to improve on that in such hot conditions but it is an important pole after the difficult qualifying in Austria. It will be a difficult race with so many riders lapping very close to each other but I have good pace and I’m confident I can fight for the victory tomorrow.”

Xavi Vierge: 5th, 2:04.770, 20 laps, 118 km.

• Vierge made a confident start to proceedings this morning and a best lap of 2:05.432 put him 11th at the end of FP3 to comfortably move directly into Q2.
• The Spaniard’s growing confidence was on display again in Q2 when he lapped in the 2:04 bracket for the first time in the frantic 15-minute session.
• A personal best pace of 2:04.770 fired him into fifth position on the grid for tomorrow’s 18-lap race and he was less than 0.2s away from claiming a stunning double front row for Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS.

“The progress we have made all weekend has been very positive”

“Conditions were very hot today but I’m happy with my performance because I think we made a step forward after FP2 yesterday. We made some changes for FP3 that didn’t work as well as we expected so changed the bike back for Q2 and I immediately felt comfortable again. We need to find a little bit more pace to race with the top guys tomorrow but I want to thank my team because the progress we have made all weekend has been very positive and I’m super focused on finishing the race in the best position possible. I think it will be a tough race with so many riders looking fast. Alex and some other riders such as Remy Gardner and Jorge Navarro are looking strong and they could break away, but I will fight until the end to be there.”
