Season’s best qualifying for Canet in blustery Barcelona
Aron Canet continued his recent improvements and set the 6th fastest in Moto2 Q2 at the Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya while Deniz Öncü was 16th.
Conditions at the Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya were much improved on Saturday, with largely sunny weather greeting the Moto2 field for their FP2 and qualifying sessions.
By the afternoon, ambient temperatures had risen to 19 degrees, the hottest conditions of the weekend so far. A strong wind added to the challenges of a fast lap of the 4.66km circuit.
The sixth Moto2 race of 2026 gets underway tomorrow at 12.15 local time and will be run over 21 laps.
Aron Canet, 6th – 1’41.552
Aron used the morning FP2 session to post a mini-race simulation over 17 laps. While 19th in the classification, the Spaniard showed a strong early pace, with five laps in the 1’42s.
The 26-year old’s first flying run in Q2 was enough for a spot in the top ten. On his second run, Aron was fully committed with his final time just one tenth off a place on the front row.
This was Aron’s best qualifying result of the season so far.
“I gave my 100% in every single corner”
Aron’s comments:
“This was the best session of the year so far. I gave my 100% in every single corner. We need to continue on that line of work to make sure we can recover many places early on that we deserve. Tomorrow will be all about managing the rear tyre, as the grip really falls away in the closing laps. So, it’ll be important to gain positions early on, manage our rear tyre and try and attack late on. Let’s give it everything!”
Deniz Öncü, 16th – 1’42.394
Like his team-mate, Deniz used FP2 to post a race simulation of 18 laps. Having set the 9th fastest time at the beginning, the Turkish rider noted some improvements on used rubber are necessary for Sunday.
The 22-year old showed some good speed at the start of Q2 thanks to his first flying lap of the session.
And Deniz was honest in his admission that he failed to put a clean lap together later in Q2 as he was unable to improve in his second run. Even still, he is confident of fighting through from the 6th row of the grid tomorrow.
“I want to keep the rhythm until the end to get as many points as possible”
Deniz’s comments:
“We’ve finished the qualifying day here in Barcelona. This morning was positive. We worked on our rhythm, doing many consecutive laps. It was preparation for the race and I was happy with how it went. I was aiming to do a top ten today in qualifying – that was the target I set myself to start the race tomorrow. But I have to be honest: I didn’t do the best qualifying session. I did no real clean laps where I showed my best. Anyway, tomorrow I’ll be starting from 16th. It’ll be a long race and I want to keep the rhythm until the end to get as many points as possible.”
