Lack of grip a decisive factor for Marc VDS duo in Barcelona
Aron Canet couldn’t take advantage of his best qualifying performance of the year so far, as he came home in 14th place, while Deniz Öncü was 22nd.
Like much of the weekend, conditions were dry and overcast on Sunday with ambient temperatures of 18 degrees at the 12.15 when the Moto2 race started.
The track surface at the Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya is notoriously low on grip, meaning the 21-lap race was one of tyre management.
A crowd of 74,890 showed up to the Catalan venue on race day to take in the sixth outing of the 2026 Moto2 season.
Aron Canet, 14th
Starting from 6th on the grid, Aron had a solid start and held position through the first chicane. But the Spaniard soon started to lose places.
A serious lack of rear grip after a number of laps meant the 26-year old went into damage limitation mode and brought it home for 14th place and two important points.
This result leaves Aron 16th in the championship standings with 13.5 points to his name.
“Today was disappointing but we’ll use this week off before Mugello to regroup”
Aron’s comments:
“That was a tough race. We had a good start and I was thinking we were where we wanted to be on the first lap. But I just had no rear grip. We expected the tyre to drop midway through the race but I was spinning early on. I tried to be as careful as possible but it was difficult to keep the wheels in line. We need to analyse what happened as the tyre degradation was a lot more than we expected. Overall, it’s been a positive weekend with a good qualifying. Today was disappointing but we’ll use this week off before Mugello to regroup and come back stronger.”
Deniz Öncü, 22nd
Starting 16th, Deniz had a strong start and gained three places on the first to sit in 13th.
Soon, the 22-year old had gained another position and had his eyes on the top ten. But he experienced a tyre drop early on in the race, which caused him to lose time to the riders around him.
Deniz now sits 17th in the championship table with 9.5 points.
“We will sit down, talk and analyse what happened today”
Deniz’s comments:
“We finished the Barcelona GP. Honestly, the race today didn’t go as I was hoping. It was very tricky for the tyre life. I struggled so much. We started and for a few laps we were fast and I was catching the front. But as soon as the tyre started to drop, it was unbelievable. I could barely ride the bike. I just want to sit down with the team to understand what happened, so it doesn’t happen again. At the moment, I cannot say this happened because of this or that. But we will sit down, talk and analyse what happened today as I was expecting a better result than this.”
