Efforts go unrewarded for Marc VDS duo in Hungary
Deniz Öncü managed to climb six places at the Balaton Park Circuit on Sunday to finish 17th, while Aron Canet crashed out on the first lap after contact with another rider.
The Balaton Park Circuit hosted only the second Hungarian Grand Prix since 1992 this weekend with Sunday’s 22-lap Moto2 race kicking off at 12:15 local time.
Conditions were close to perfect for racing with ambient temperatures of 26 degrees slightly warmer than Saturday.
Crowds were fairly sparse around the 4.8km Hungarian circuit to witness the eighth round of the 2026 Moto2 World Championship.
Aron Canet, DNF
Starting from 16th, Aron gained two places through the tight first two corners to sit 14th as the field entered the back straight for the first time.
But the unfortunate Spaniard received contact from another rider at Turn 12, which forced him to crash out on the first lap.
This result puts Aron 17th in the championship standings with 13.5 points.
“We had a good start but then another rider pushed us off track”
Aron’s comments:
“I don’t have much to say. I’m very disappointed with how the race went. We had a good start and I was feeling quite comfortable. But then another rider pushed us off track. This is racing. Sometimes it’s us that makes these kinds of mistakes. Other times it’s someone else that does it. We’re going through a tough moment. It’ll be good to disconnect for a few days and then reset before coming back stronger in Brno.”
Deniz Öncü, 17th
Launching a comeback from 23rd on the grid, Deniz was boxed in through the tight Turns 1 and 2 just after the start, and lost one place on lap one.
Able to lap consistently in the 1’42s, the Turkish rider kept pushing throughout and set his personal best time on the penultimate lap as he rose to 17th.
Deniz now sits 16th in the championship standings with 15.5 points to his name.
“I’m already focused on Czechia because I want to get back to my level”
Deniz’s comments:
“We’ve finished the Hungarian GP today. This weekend has been very hard for me. I just need to get over these hard moments. The next round is Czechia. I’m already focused on that round because I just want to get back to my level. These positions where I was fighting this weekend, and finishing 17th today, gives me a lot of pain. Anyway, we’ll keep working and keep pushing. Last weekend showed our potential. I’m sure if we keep our heads down, we can come through this tough moment.”
