Marc VDS duo out of luck at sizzling Dutch GP
Despite excellent starts, Elf Marc VDS Racing Team riders failed to score points at the TT Circuit Assen on Sunday as Aron Canet finished 16th and Deniz Öncü crashed out.
Heavy overnight rain meant conditions were slightly cooler than the two previous days. Ambient temperatures stood at 28 degrees at lunchtime on Sunday.
The tenth Moto2 race of 2026 got underway at 12:15 local time and was held over 22 laps.
108,388 fans were present on Sunday to watch the 10th round of the Moto2 World Championship, making this race one of the best attended of the year.
Aron Canet, 16th
Having shown strong rhythm all weekend, Aron started in determined fashion from 16th and gained a place on the first lap. And ending lap four, he had climbed to twelfth.
But a tough move from another rider at the final chicane pushed the Spaniard wide on the tenth lap, which dropped him to 20th. From there he recovered to 16th and was just a few tenths off scoring a point at the chequered flag.
This result puts Aron 20th in the championship standings with 13.5 points.
“We could fight a bit today and show some speed. Let’s take the positives.”
Aron’s comments:
“In a way I’m frustrated. We showed good speed today and I was able to recover some positions in the early laps only for another rider to push me off track mid-race, which meant we finished out of the points and much lower than we could have. In another way I feel this was a more positive weekend. Brno didn’t go well. Any changes we tried on the bike didn’t work. But I felt better here. I was annoyed to not maximise my potential in qualifying, but we could fight a bit today and show some speed. Let’s take the positives from Assen and go again in Germany in two weeks.”
Deniz Öncü, DNF
Starting from 19th, Deniz was determined to make up early ground and gained two places on the first lap. By the end of lap three he had climbed to twelfth.
But a crash at the fast Turn 10 on lap 17 ended the 22-year old’s hopes of a point-scoring ride. He was sat in 14th at the time, and was sure he could climb higher.
The result puts Deniz 18th in the championship standings with 15.5 points.
“I’m very sorry to the team for this crash. I won’t give up. I’ll keep going and keep pushing”
Deniz’s comments:
“We’ve finished the GP here at Assen. I was trying to do my best all weekend as always. I started the race from 19th. I was pushing at my absolute maximum early on. I was having some moments with the front and the rear. I just tried to do my best pushing but unfortunately, I ended up in the gravel. The good thing is I am OK but I’m sure that I could have finished the race in the top twelve. I want to take the positives from this weekend. The good thing was we weren’t the last ones. We made a small step compared to Brno. Anyway, I’m very sorry to the team for this crash. I won’t give up. I’ll keep going and keep pushing and we’ll be back in Germany in two weeks. The spirit is the same and we’ll just go for it. ”
