Marc VDS duo looking at positives after tough Indonesian GP
Deniz Öncü saw the chequered flag in a hectic Moto2 encounter on the island of Lombok as he finished 22nd while Aron Canet retired with a technical issue.
Conditions were again punishing on Sunday at the Mandalika International Circuit with track temperatures hitting 64 degrees ahead of the Moto2 race and humidity a sweltering 71%.
The Moto2 race was red flagged on the first lap after a crash at Turn 1 took down four riders. After a short delay, a full restart was then held over 14 laps.
An enthusiastic crowd of 53,296 were present on race day at the Indonesian Grand Prix to take in the 17th outing of the 2026 Moto2 season.
Aron Canet, DNF
Starting 27th after receiving a 9-place grid penalty on Friday, Aron was determined to manage his physical condition over the race after he injured his neck and shoulder on Saturday.
The Spaniard had a steady start, but retired with an unfortunate technical issue on lap seven.
This result sees Aron remain 22nd in the championship standings with 17.5 points.
“We’ve lost a bit of momentum but now we can recharge, recover and reset”
Aron’s comments:
“It was a tough weekend. I thought we had a chance of scoring some points today but we struggled with the same issues as Friday and Saturday. I still have some pain in my neck and shoulder after yesterday’s crash but I was determined to keep my head down. Maybe that affected our speed a bit. But then on lap seven I felt something with the bike. It’s a shame to retire like this. It felt like we were making progress a few weeks ago and we’ve lost a bit of momentum since Austria. But we have an important week off now when we can recharge the batteries, recover and reset for Phillip Island. I want to be back fighting for the top ten there.”
Deniz Öncü, 22nd
Starting 25th on the grid, Deniz enjoyed his trademark strong start and ended the first lap in 19th with eyes on the point scoring places ahead.
But the Turkish rider struggled to find the ideal feeling over the 14 laps and brought his machine home to finish 22nd.
Deniz’s remains 15th in the championship standings with 47.5 points.
“It wasn’t a good round but the motivation is still high”
Deniz’s comments:
“We finished the Indonesian Grand Prix. I’ll say this was the most difficult weekend of the year so far. Honestly, we had a big crash on Friday and it was really tough to recover the momentum after that. The low grip conditions were just really tricky for us and I hoped it would get better on Sunday. But I didn’t feel comfortable from the first lap until the last. We need to look at the positives. We survived this weekend. It wasn’t a good round but the motivation is still high for the next rounds. Now the aim is to bounce back in Australia.”
