Alex Marquez completes season with third place in Valencia
The Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS rider scored his sixth podium of the season before home fans while teammate Joan Mir won 'Rookie of the Year' honours despite not finishing the race.
Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS riders Alex Marquez and Joan Mir lined up for the final race of the season at a rain soaked and cold Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia.
Alex Marquez showed his podium potential with the second fastest time in the warm-up. Marquez had showed superb wet weather pace all weekend and surged from 16th on the grid to lead the race on lap six. Unfortunately victory eluded Marquez when he crashed in the tricky conditions on lap 15 but bravely remounted to finish third in the race and fourth in the championship standings with 173 points.
Joan Mir completed the warm-up session in 20th position but was confident for the race starting from the second row. However the young Spaniard made an early exit from his final Moto2 race when he fell on entry to turn two on the opening lap. Despite this brief race appearance Mir clinched the 'Rookie of the Year' title and finished sixth in the standings with 155 points.
The first race of the 2019 Moto2 World Championship will be held from March 8 to10 at Losail in Qatar.
Alex Marquez: 3rd, +22.175
“This podium is good finish to the season”
“To come back and finish on the podium after my crash is a good result which secured my fourth place in the championship which is satisfying. I’m little disappointed because the victory was there, I could feel it, but I was pushing a lot out front. I decided to breathe a little bit and be more calm but made a small mistake. The podium is a good finish to the season and I want to thank my team who did a great job and I’m happy for that even though the results we expected did not come.”
Joan Mir: DNF
“I would have liked to finish my final race in Moto2”
“I am disappointed and sincerely I don’t know what happened because the bike was completely in a straight line when I crashed. I really would have liked to finish my final race in Moto2 and leave the class with a nice taste but these things happen. But I am Rookie of the Year so I’m happy about that and now I’m ready to prepare for MotoGP next year.”
