Arbolino and Salac wrap up Spielberg test on a high

Less than 24 hours after scoring an excellent double top 10 finish in the Grand Prix of Austria, Elf Marc VDS Racing Team riders Tony Arbolino and Filip Salac were back on track in Spielberg for a one-day test.

  • Arbolino and Salac joined 10 other Moto2 riders testing over four sessions at the 4.34km Spielberg track today, which ended with the Elf Marc VDS Racing duo completing 117 laps between them.
  • The stop and go layout enabled both to work on front-end settings to improve braking stability while time was dedicated to improving rear grip exiting Spielberg’s hard acceleration zones.

/// TONY ARBOLINO: 3rd, 1:33.761, 50 laps

  • Boosted by a season best fifth place in Sunday’s Austrian round, Arbolino made a fast start to the test and the Italian led the opening session with a best time of 1:33.761, which put him over a tenth-and-a-half clear of his nearest rival.
  • Arbolino’s main area of work was experimenting with front fork and geometry settings to improve in braking and he was able to set the second quickest time in sessions two and three.
  • Satisfied with the results of a busy but productive test schedule, Arbolino decided not to participate in the fourth and final session of the day and he ended the test third fastest overall.

“We made a good step in the areas we”

“Today was an important test and I think we can be satisfied with the work we have completed. Testing immediately after a race weekend is important because you have a reference, and you have a direct comparison with some of the settings used during the Grand Prix. But it is true that the track is in a very good condition, so you have to be very precise to improve. I think we made a good step in the areas we wanted to and now we can decide what direction we will take with the set-up when we arrive at the next round in MotorLand Aragon.”

/// FILIP SALAC: 9th, 1:34.440, 67 laps

  • Motivation was high for Salac going into today’s action after he scored his first top 10 for the Elf Marc VDS Racing Team in last Sunday’s 23-lap Moto2 battle in Spielberg.
  • Having missed recent races in Assen and Germany, Salac was keen to exploit the available track time to the maximum to work on numerous set-up options.
  • The Czech rider was busy throughout the day assessing rear suspension settings to improve his pace on worn tyres and he placed ninth on the overall timesheets with a best time of 1:34.440.

“We did a lot of work and my feeling was good”

“I was able to complete a very productive test in which we have been able to work well without the time pressure of a race weekend. After three days of riding in the Grand Prix, the left knee I injured testing in Aragon last week was quite painful and I had some inflammation. But thankfully it didn’t stop us from carrying out some interesting set-up work. We worked a lot on used tyres and my feeling was good. We had a good result in the race here in Austria and now we’ve had a strong test. So now I can’t wait to get started in Aragon next week.”
