Arbolino salvages seventh in dramatic Indonesian GP

Tony Arbolino climbed 15 places to finish 7th at the Pertamina Mandalika Circuit after running off track on the first lap, while Filip Salac came home in 15th.

  • Just like Friday and Saturday, conditions at the Pertamina Mandalika Circuit were the most challenging of the year so far as Elf Marc VDS Racing Team riders Tony Arbolino and Filip Salac raced over 22 laps in track temperatures of 59 degrees.
  • A total of 60,709 people were in attendance to watch the 5th ever Indonesian Grand Prix and the 15th Moto2 race of the 2024 on Sunday.

  • Launching from 7th on the grid, Tony had a complicated 1st lap. He ran off track at both Turns 9 and 10, which lost him at lot of time and meant he started lap 2 in 22nd position.
  • It was a shame, as the Italian soon demonstrated he had the pace to finish on the podium. He posted his personal best lap on lap 19 and gained an incredible 15 positions as he came home 7th, just 2.7s back of a podium finish.
  • Tony’s 5th straight top 8 result sees him remain in 10th in the World Championship with 122 points.

“We showed after the first lap that we were really fast”

“It was such bad luck on the first lap. We didn’t get the best start and then there was some drama going into Turn 10, when a lot of riders ran wide. I lost a lot of time there. We have to improve a tiny bit the qualifying and the feeling in the early part of the race when we’re pushing. We were hoping for a better result today, but we showed after the first lap that we were really fast. I felt really good out there once I found my rhythm and I was still able to get a strong result and some good points. I’m confident we can go to Japan and be back fighting at the front.”

/// FILIP SALAC, 15th

  • Starting 23rd, Filip had a strong start but had to take avoiding action when Jaume Masia crashed in front of him on the exit of Turn 1, which meant he ended the 1st lap in 20th.
  • From there, the Czech rider still found he was losing time in the track’s 2nd Sector. Yet he was able to make up 4 places as he took the chequered flag in 15th.
  • Filip remains 17th in the championship standings with 41 points to his name.

“I was still losing a lot in Sector 2”

“It was a hard race! I didn’t have a perfect start and then I had to go off track because there was a collision between other riders, and one crashed in front of me, so I lost a lot of positions there. Then I was doing my best but I was still losing a lot in Sector 2. I’m sorry to the team because the bike was ready to get a better result today. Anyway, we’ll keep our heads up before heading to Japan, which is one of my favourite tracks. I’m sure we’ll have a better race there and come away from next weekend than a better taste than here.”
