Canet and Oncu build Boscoscuro experience in important Jerez test
Two days of official testing for Elf Marc VDS Racing Team riders Aron Canet and Deniz Oncu has concluded at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto in Spain ahead of the opening round of the Moto2 World Championship in Thailand next weekend
After rain prevented any meaningful testing recently at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal, two dry days at Jerez gave Canet and Oncu valuable track time as they continue gaining knowledge and experience of the Boscoscuro chassis they will race over 22 rounds in 2026
The pair completed just one shy of 250 laps between them during an intense two days at Jerez before the Moto2 title chase begins in Buriram on March 1
Aron Canet: 20th, 1:39.860, 112 laps
Back riding a Boscoscuro machine for the first time since 2021, the Jerez showdown was another important step in enabling the Spanish star to understand what he needs to extract maximum performance from the Italian chassis moving into his seventh season in Moto2.
Canet escaped injury in a high-speed crash at turn eight on the second afternoon as he worked through an extensive range of set-up options to adapt to the Boscoscuro.
The 26-year-old made positive progress throughout the Jerez test and at its conclusion he was less than half-a-second away from the top 10 with plenty more to come once he’s fully confident with the 2026 Boscoscuro machine.
“We are working hard and moving in the right direction”
“This was a very important test for us to understand more what I need from the Boscoscuro chassis. We are still very much in the early stages of learning about the potential of the package and the only way to improve is to complete a lot of laps and work hard together as a team to unlock what I need. We were able to work on a lot of different setting options, and I think we our finding the right direction. It is a process I am enjoying and I’m relishing the challenge and we’ll keep pushing hard to show our full potential in the first races of the season.”
Deniz Oncu: 26th, 1:40.428, 137 laps
Dry conditions for the Jerez test was certainly a welcome boost for Oncu, who is trying to learn the all-new Boscoscuro machine while getting back up to full racing speed after missing the second half of the 2025 Moto2 season with a serious left leg injury.
A small technical issue cost him some precious track time on day one but the Turk’s eagerness to get to grips quickly with the Boscoscuro was evident on day two when he completed a mammoth 83 laps.
A best lap of 1:40.428 was only a fraction outside of the fastest ever Moto2 race lap in Jerez and Oncu is now looking forward to his first competitive action since last July when he lines up on the grid a week on Sunday in Thailand.
“I can see the bike has potential but we need time”
“I am happy to complete these two days in dry conditions because it gave me more of an opportunity to gain experience with the new bike. I feel I’m getting back into a good rhythm myself because it has been such a long time I’ve been pushing on a Moto2 bike since my injury last year. It is a big challenge because the Boscoscuro is completely different to the bike I’ve previously raced in Moto2 but step-by-step I feel we are making good progress. Already I can see this bike has potential, but what I need is kilometres. It has been fantastic though working closely with my crew because I know I have great support behind me and this team is going pushing at the maximum to help me succeed. Now we’ll take a few days to look at some data from Jerez so we can try and start this new adventure in the best possible way in Thailand.”
