Di Meglio charges to top spot in historic first MotoE practice
Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS and Mike di Meglio combined to create a piece of history today, having the proud distinction of topping the first day of official practice for the inaugural FIM Enel MotoE World Cup in Germany.
- Two 30-minute practice sessions kicked off an exciting new chapter for Grand Prix racing today, with zero emission competition making its much-anticipated debut at the tight and twisty Sachsenring.
- Frenchman di Meglio rode his Energica Ego Corsa to the eighth fastest time this morning and improved by the huge margin of 1.2s in a restarted FP2.
- The 31-year-old’s rapid lap of 1:28.547 put him clear of Niki Tuuli by the slender margin of 0.039s and less than 0.1s split the top three in a closely fought and intense battle.
- E-Pole, which will decide grid positions after each rider has completed one lap of the 3.67km Sachsenring track, gets underway at 4pm local time tomorrow, with di Meglio going out last courtesy of his outstanding performance in practice.
Mike di Meglio: 1st, 1:28.547, 23 laps, 84 km
“I’m very happy to be the fastest rider on the first day of practice for this new adventure”
“It is a very special feeling and I’m very happy to be the fastest rider on the first day of practice for this new adventure. I was only eighth this morning and this made me sad because I wanted to show that myself and the team can be very competitive. Being first today is the best possible way to start this weekend and this new era. We started the day with the base we used at the final test in Valencia and I felt strong on the bike. In Valencia, we understood so many things with this bike and how to set it up and which direction we need to take. We did an amazing job and this afternoon on my first lap I was 0.7s quicker than FP1 and I improved by one second in my first stint. E-Pole will be interesting because the first time I jump on the bike tomorrow it will be to fight for a good position on the grid. Each time I went out on track today I tried to be very fast because that is going to be so important for E-Pole. My target is to be minimum on the second row and then we can try and play for the podium.”
