Dixon claims heroic pole after turbulent Sachsenring Saturday
Jake Dixon shook off the effects of a huge FP2 crash to pass through Q1 and then claim a 2nd pole position of 2025, while Filip Salac was 14th.
The rain that was forecasted for Saturday arrived in a big way at the Sachsenring with both of the day’s Moto2 sessions taking place on a wet track.
After early morning rain, the track was wet but drying for Elf Marc VDS Racing Team riders Jake Dixon and Filip Salac in FP2, while intense lunchtime rain meant the afternoon was fully wet.
The forecast is mixed for Sunday when the 11th Moto2 race of 2025 will be held over 25 laps. It gets underway at 12.15 local time.
Jake Dixon, 1st – 1’33.487
Jake started the morning positively and was immediately posting fastest times in FP2 before he suffered a massive high-side at Turn 11. Despite being battered and bruised, the Briton was OK to take part in qualifying.
The 29-year old gradually recovered his confidence in Q1 as he improved his personal best lap time from 1’37.079 to a 1’34.088 to place 2nd.
The Briton was then immediately on the pace in Q2 as he battled Barry Baltus and Tony Arbolino for pole position. His penultimate lap of the session was enough to claim a 2nd pole of the year by 0.07s.
“Today was crazy! To come back and be on pole position after this morning’s big crash is incredible. I joked with the team in hospitality before qualifying and said, ‘It would make a good story if I came back and got pole this afternoon!’ You know what? Watching from a distance I see athletes in other sports coming back from difficult situations. Like a fighter in a UFC fight getting knocked down in the first round and then winning, and you think: ‘how?’ That’s what today felt like for me. I got knocked down but came back. It feels incredible but it’s important to remember tomorrow’s a new day. I’m going to do a raffle with the boys in the team to see who wins the watch you get for pole position. Everyone will be complaining otherwise! I think that’s a fair way to decide it! It’s been a good day.”
Filip Salac, 14th – 1’36.700
Filip didn’t feel comfortable in FP2 and as the track dried, he wasn’t confident to push. He placed 26th at the end of the 30 minutes.
The Czech rider was pleased to have fully wet conditions during Q2, where he could try different settings and work on recovering his feeling in the rain.
In a 9-lap run in Q2, the 23-year old set his best time the 6th time around, which was enough for 14th.
“It was a tough day here at the Sachsenring. It was our first chance to ride in the wet since Austin and we really needed it. My feelings today weren’t perfect. In the morning session the track was drying up and they weren’t the perfect conditions for me. I didn’t like them so much. Then in Q2 it was fully wet, which was good. Finally, we were able to try some different things with the settings. It wasn’t our best qualifying but considering how we felt it wasn’t bad. We did a small step forward, which is important because we’re not the best in wet conditions at the moment. We hope tomorrow will be dry and we’re confident of having a good race.”
