Dixon takes spectacular fourth in Balaton thriller

After leading the opening of Sunday’s Moto2 race in Hungary, Jake Dixon was just off the podium as he took a brilliant 4th place, while Filip Salac was 8th.

The 14th Moto2 race of 2025 was the first chance for Elf Marc VDS Racing Team riders Jake Dixon and Filip Salac to try the tight 4.0km Balaton Park out in racing conditions.

Conditions were close to perfect for Sunday’s 22-lap Moto2 race, which got underway at 12.15 local time. Despite a consistent wind blowing, track temperatures reached a warm 40 degrees.

The enthusiasm for the first Hungarian Grand Prix since 1992 was muted with a modest 32,520 spectators showing up at the track next to Lake Balaton on Sunday.

Jake Dixon, 4th

Launching from 4th on the grid, Jake had a good start and placed himself brilliantly in the first two turns to take the lead out of Turn 4 on lap 1.

Dixon was then involved in an epic fight at the front. Just back of the lead fight, he held off several names magnificently to finish 4th, just 0.8s off victory.

This result sees Jake remain 5th in the World Championship with 132 points.

“That was a pretty good day! It was nice to lead a Moto2 race again after so long. Honestly, I felt a bit out of sorts when I was leading. It felt new again! From where we were just a week ago, we really needed to get that race under our belts and get a race’s worth of data so we can fine tune that going into the next races. I just want to say a massive thanks to the team, to Patrick, Marina and everyone who put in place the things I needed to show what I can do. OK, I didn’t get on the podium today but to be 0.8s from victory wasn’t bad. I’m happy enough. There are things we need to fine tune for the next one, but this was a really good day!”

Filip Salac, 8th

Starting from 10th on the grid, Filip avoided any early chaos and gained a place over the course of a strong first lap.

Just back of the fight for the podium, the Czech rider showed a consistent rhythm as he pulled clear of two other riders to finish 8th, just 6s off the victor.

This result sees Filip one place in the World Championship to 14th with 79 points.

“The race is done and we finished well. I think it’s not the position we wanted or we deserved, but after starting tenth on this track, where it’s so difficult to overtake, I lost a few seconds in the first laps. The pace was good in the end. From lap five my rhythm was strong but I just wasn’t close enough to attack the group ahead. I did my best today. I really pushed to my limit and I’m happy with that. Now we’re looking forward to Barcelona. We had a good result there last year so I can’t wait to get there and show what I can do.”
