Elf Marc VDS duo ready to do battle in Britain after tough qualifying

Tony Arbolino was 12th on Saturday afternoon at Silverstone when qualifying for the British GP while Filip Salac was 22nd.

  • Conditions were cool but dry for the tenth Moto2 qualifying session of the year, as the Elf Marc VDS Racing Team’s Tony Arbolino and Filip Salac rode in track temperatures of 36 degrees at the legendary Silverstone circuit.
  • In a change of schedule for Sunday, action at the British venue starts on Sunday at 15:30 local time and will be the third and final race of the day. The race will be 17 laps long.

  • On the morning of his 24th birthday, Tony found himself in 13th in the morning P2 session, 0.7s off the fastest time, while working on improving rear tyre degradation for Sunday’s race.
  • Having posted strong times throughout Friday, the Italian had hopes of qualifying on the front row, but couldn’t find the ideal feeling in Q2. Despite lapping 0.4s under the previous lap record, he was 12th, 0.5s off Ai Ogura’s pole time.

“I’m confident of getting among the fight for the podium”

“It was another important day in terms of understanding things with the bike and the tyres. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the best out of the package in qualifying, which means we’re starting from P12. The race is tomorrow and we all know it will be a long one. Over 17 laps at a track like this anything can happen so we’re already focussed on that, and I’m confident of getting among the fight for the podium if I can get a good start. The idea is to get the best setting in the bike before the lights go out and then I’ll be fully focussed on myself.”

/// FILIP SALAC, 22nd – 2’04.449

  • In his first Saturday session since Mugello in early June, Filip continued to gain experience and confidence as he posted 11 laps in P2 and set the 23rd fastest time.
  • Filip wasn’t able to place higher than 8th in Q1. But the Czech rider posted 7 consecutive laps which gave him some confidence ahead of tomorrow’s race.

“The aim is to score some good points”

“It wasn’t an easy day for us. In the morning session I was a little out of line because I was looking for other riders to follow rather than focus on my own performance. It was difficult for me to set a good lap time. Then in the Qualifying I was 8th position in Q1. It wasn’t perfect but we did 7 consecutive laps which gave us a lot of data for tomorrow. It also gave me a bit of confidence. So, I can’t wait for tomorrow’s race. We have to keep pushing as it’s not easy after such a long time off this bike with the level we have in Moto2 this year. I hope to keep gaining experience and confidence and the aim is to score some good points.”
