Fighting fifth for Arbolino under Austrian sun

Fighting fifth for Arbolino under Austrian sun

The 11th round of 2024 yielded season best results for Elf Marc VDS Racing Team team-mates Tony Arbolino and Filip Salac, who recovered a number of places to finish 5th and 10th respectively.

  • Despite intense thunderstorms on Saturday evening, and cool, misty conditions around the Red Bull Ring on Sunday morning, the clouds cleared by midday meaning the 23-lap Moto2 race took place under sunny skies and in ambient temperatures of 23 degrees.
  • A strong crowd of 67,271 was in attendance at the Red Bull Ring to watch the 11th Moto2 race of the 2024 season.

/// TONY ARBOLINO, 5th

  • Tony qualified fourth on Saturday, but a subsequent 3-place grid penalty meant he started from 7th. After a tricky 1st lap, the Italian soon found his groove and was up to 6th by lap 4.
  • After briefly fighting with Jake Dixon for 4th, the 24-year old was lacking a few small details with the rear of his bike, leaving him 5th at the finish, just 4.9s back of the podium places.
  • This result means Tony sits in 11th in the World Championship standings with 61 points.

“We were working really well this weekend”

“A good race! We were quite close to the podium battle but just couldn’t get close enough to fight with those guys. We still need to find two or three details on the rear part of the bike that we’re missing at the moment. If we do that, I have no doubt we’ll be finishing higher up in races. We have a test here tomorrow and hopefully it won’t rain so we can try some things. We were working really well this weekend and I was feeling comfortable with the bike all weekend long. Let’s try and make another step ahead of Aragon, and I’m sure we can be fighting to finish on the podium there!”

/// FILIP SALAC, 10th

  • Filip knew he had strong rhythm despite starting from 16th. After a steady getaway, the Czech rider picked off a position early on to sit 15th on lap 2.
  • The 22-year old then found himself in a massive 9-rider fight for 6th position. After he was able to pass Izan Guevara, Filip put the pain he felt from a recently sustained knee injury out of his mind to pass several riders and climb to 10th place by the chequered flag.
  • The 6 points gained for 10th means Filip sits 20th in the World Championship with 20 points.

“We did our best race of the year”

“Sunday is done and we did our best race of the year! Unfortunately, we were starting quite far back, which was the main reason why I wasn’t able to be closer to the front. I was stuck behind Guevara for half of the race. When I finally got by him, I was quickly able to catch the group in front and pass some of them. I’m really happy because the bike was working well today. The team have done an amazing job. It’s been a good weekend overall so now we have to keep this going at Aragon next time out.”
