From glory to heartache for Lowes at home round

Having claimed a 2nd Superpole Race podium of the year in front of fervent home fans at Donington Park on Sunday morning, Sam Lowes crashed out of 2nd place in Race 2.

Sam Lowes once again underlined his competitiveness with this year’s Elf Marc VDS Racing Team package by finishing 3rd in the Superpole Race before crashing from 2nd in Race 2.

The 34-year old finishes his home round by remaining in 6th place in the world standings.

For the 3rd day in succession, track conditions were close to perfect at Donington Park, with ambient temperatures peaking at 24 degrees during Race 2 on Sunday.

The day started in promising fashion for Sam. Eager to show his potential for Sunday’s two races, the Briton was competitive in morning Warm-Up, when he set the 2nd fastest time, just 0.1s back from pace setter Nicolo Bulega.

The Briton kicked on from that by starting the 10-lap Superpole race well from 3rd on the grid, losing 1 place and ending the 1st lap in 4th. He then put a neat move on Jonathan Rea on lap 4 to take 3rd place.

From there, Sam was able to bring it home in 3rd for his second Superpole Race podium of the year, and just 1s back of Bulega in 2nd.

The Englishman was fully fired up for another good result in Race 2. Starting from 3rd again, Sam got another excellent start to slot in to 2nd, just behind Toprak Razgatlioglu on lap 1.

The former World Supersport Champion was gradually lowering his pace as he pushed to stay with the leader. But he unfortunately crashed out at Turn 1 starting lap 4.

Despite two non-scores on home soil, this was another weekend when Lowes showcased his ever-increasing potential with his 2025 Elf Marc VDS Racing Team package.

Sam’s performance at home consolidated his 6th place in the overall standings. He now has 131 points with Hungary’s new Balaton Park Circuit up next in two weeks’ time at the end of July.

“There are plenty of positives this weekend but how Race 2 ended has left a bitter taste in my mouth”

“It’s disappointing how Race 2 played out. I chose the hard rear tyre and made a good start but was struggling a little bit to stay with Toprak early on. But it wasn’t too bad. He’s so good on the brakes, and maybe he just pulled me in a bit to Turn 1 and I made a mistake there. Overall though there are quite a few positives to take. That was only the second time this year that I’ve made a mistake in a race. I’ve been taken down twice, and obviously the crash yesterday wasn’t my fault. We also missed the full race distance yesterday. I’m sorry to the team for that mistake and I’m disappointed. But I’m happy with the Superpole podium, and I’m happy with my pace over the weekend. Plus, I’m happy with my starts. So, there are plenty of positives this weekend but how Race 2 ended has left a bitter taste in my mouth. I think we’re showing what we can do and we just have to keep working to keep this going.”
