Weather was always going to play a part on Sunday at the 1st WorldSBK round in Hungary since 1990 after heavy overnight rain left the 4.07km Balaton Park Circuit wet for Warm-Up.

It provided Sam with a good chance to assess his feelings in those conditions and he placed 2nd in the session, 0.2s behind the fastest time, which gave him confidence going in to the Superpole Race.

But conditions had improved significantly ahead of the 10-lap shootout. While the track was still largely wet, a dry racing line was big enough to convince Sam to correctly choose slick tyres.

It was an inspired decision. Sam was immediately in the victory fight as a massive lead group assessed the conditions early on. On lap 3, the Briton took control and quickly opened up a lead of 1.3s.

But by lap 7, reigning World Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu had closed in and overtook the 34-year old. Sam then came home in a comfortable 2nd place, 2.8s back of the victor, to equal his best WorldSBK result to date.

In the 21-lap Race 2, Sam enjoyed another strong start from 2nd on the grid and was quickly involved in a 4-rider fight for 2nd with Alvaro Bautista, Andrea Locatelli and Nicolo Bulega.

Sam held 2nd place from laps 3 to 6, before Bulega eventually passed him. From there, he expertly managed the gap back to Danilo Petrucci in 4th to claim a maiden full race podium in WorldSBK.

Sunday’s excellent showings have strengthened Sam’s 6th place in the overall standings. He now has 156 points before heading to Magny-Cours in France for Round 9 in early September.

I’m delighted and I want to say a massive thank you to the team”

“I’m really happy with how Sunday went. Yesterday was obviously a low point. But we’ve managed to bounce back well as a group and a team, which is mega. The bike worked really well today. It was positive to be fast in Warm-Up when it wasn’t fully dry at the beginning. Also, when it dried up, I felt good. This is positive going forward as there are four rounds to go and there is a good chance of it being wet toward the end of the year. Then, the races ended up being pretty dry, which was a surprise after looking at the forecast. I’m always happy to ride in the dry and dry results mean more. So, I’m delighted with that. I want to say a massive thank you to the team for their work this weekend. It’s a new circuit and it was a big job for everybody. We had no previous data here so it was really hard work. I’m just really happy with the results. Thanks to everyone who helped and now we can look forward to a few weeks off. Let’s now look forward to coming back at Magny-Cours and keeping this run going!”
