Stunning second for Dixon in Barcelona chess match
Jake Dixon managed his rear tyre to perfection to take 2nd place in the Catalan GP thanks to a late attack, while Filip Salac was taken out in an unfortunate Turn 1 crash.
Conditions were hot, humid and overcast at the Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday with Elf Marc VDS Racing Team riders Jake Dixon and Filip Salac racing in ambient temperatures of 27 degrees and humidity of 65%.
With grip levels incredibly low around the 4.66km track, managing the rear tyre over 21 laps was key to a successful race here.
Spectators flocked in their tens of thousands to the spectacular circuit outside Barcelona on Sunday to watch the 15th round of 2025, with 83,320 in attendance on race day.
Jake Dixon, 2nd
Starting from 2nd on the grid, Jake had a good start to maintain position and sit behind pole sitter Dani Holgado at the close of lap one.
As Holgado broke clear, the Briton was then fighting with Dani Muñoz for 2nd throughout the race. After sitting in 3rd from lap six Jake took 2nd with a neat Turn 1 pass on the penultimate lap.
Jake finished 2.5s back of the victor and remain 5th in the championship standings with 152 points.
“I’m super happy. I had a bit of drought since the Sachsenring without a podium! I’m delighted to be back and I want to thank Marina (Rossi), Patrick (Kramer) and all the guys and girls in my team. First and foremost, I hope Filip’s OK because I heard he crashed. We picked up where we left off at Balaton Park. I’ve had a personnel change in the team. I feel much better on the bike now and I’m able to ride in the way that I need to. I don’t think it will be easy from here but we’ve built on the soild base from the last round here. Misano is a track where I’ve struggled in the past but I’m happy to go there in good form. Let’s keep this run going and do the same again at the next one.”
Filip Salac, DNF
After penalties for two riders who qualified ahead, Filip launched from 5th on the grid and the middle of the 2nd row. After a good start, he got pushed wide at Turn 4, ran off track and rejoined in 28th.
The Czech rider then set about making a comeback and had picked off 8 riders when starting lap 9. But luck was not on his side as another rider crashed into him at Turn 1, which prematurely ended his race.
After a trip to the medical centre, Filip was declared fit after the race. This result seems Filip remain 13th in the championship standings with 79 points.
“It wasn’t the Sunday we wanted. I got a really good start and was third going into Turn 1. But then some people came from behind and pushed me wide. Then in Turn 4 I had to go into the gravel because (Aron) Canet pushed me off track. I rejoined and was one of the fastest on track. I was too far away but I was still recovering well. Then (Jorge) Navarro ran in to the back of me at Turn 1. I was unlucky but at the same time I feel quite fortunate as the bike flicked up and over my head. It could’ve been much worse. I have nothing broken and we’ll try to return to Misano and restart there. I want to say thanks to the team for all their continued support. It’s a shame about today’s result but at the same time I’m lucky to be relatively OK.”
