Unfortunate end to positive Aragón weekend for Lowes

Sam Lowes wasn’t able to follow up his brilliant Saturday showing at the Motorland Aragón Circuit as he placed 5th in the Superpole Race before falling from the fight for fourth in Race 2.

Sam Lowes scored a fighting 5th place in Sunday’s Superpole Race before remounting from a Race 2 crash to finish 19th.

Even if he scored just 5 points on Sunday, the 35-year old still sits 6th in the championship standings with two rounds to go.

SUPERPOLE RACE: 5th
RACE 2: 19th

Conditions were overcast and slightly cooler on Sunday for the Aragón round of the WorldSBK Championship with ambient temperatures sitting at 26 degrees ahead of Race 2.

Fresh from a brilliant podium in Race 1, Lowes started the day well as he topped the Warm-Up session by 0.1s from Alvaro Bautista.

The Briton was in a confident frame of mind for the 10-lap Superpole Race. Lowes started well from 4th on the grid and was involved in an entertaining five-way battle with Nicolo Bulega, Toprak Razgatlioglu, Alvaro Bautista and Andrea Iannone.

Racing the harder Pirelli front tyre, Lowes didn’t feel as comfortable as Saturday afternoon and was unable to up his pace significantly. Even still, he finished 5th, just 1.8s off race winner Bulega.

That meant Lowes started Race 2 from 5th on the grid. A tricky start and first corner meant he was then playing catch up from 8th at the close of lap 1.

The 35-year old soon started making progress. By the closing stage of the race he had closed in on Jonathan Rea and Iannone in the fight for fourth and was plotting a move on the penultimate lap when he lost the front at Turn 14.

While Lowes was able to remount, he finished 19th and out of the points. Even still, he remains in 6th place in the overall standings. He now has 184 points before heading to Estoril in Portugal for Round 11 in the second weekend in October.

“It’s been a positive weekend so it’s a shame to end it like that. But that’s racing. I think we’re getting closer.”

“It was a disappointing Sunday. We rode well this weekend and were right on the pace. This morning with the harder front tyre, I didn’t quite have the feeling I thought I would. The pace was faster and I didn’t really make an improvement from yesterday, which was frustrating. Then in Race 2 it was a bit more difficult starting from further back. I didn’t get a great start and was just stuck in the group. Not much else to say really. I didn’t improve my riding enough from yesterday to today – it’s better to say that than anything about the bike. Thanks to the team for the good job overall. It was a shame to slip off at the end of Race 2. It’s not acceptable but it was a small mistake as I was trying to get a run on Jonathan (Rea) onto the back straight. It was just one of those days. It’s been a positive weekend so it’s a shame to end it like that. But that’s racing. I think we’re getting closer. We need to improve some areas and I need to work on a few bits of my riding. But we’ll come back again at the next one and be good to go.”
