Racing cancelled at Silverstone because of rain
The MotoGP British Grand Prix was cancelled because of unsafe track conditions due to heavy and constant rain at Silverstone today.
The warm-up session was conducted at 9am at but on a wet track when the forecast rain and heavy cloud enveloped the Silverstone Circuit.
The MotoGP race was scheduled for 11:30am but was not possible after more than four hours of non-stop rain with Race Direction cancelling the race at 4:00pm because of the unsafe conditions.
The main issue for track safety was the many puddles of standing water and the aquaplaning of bikes in the slippery conditions.
The next race for Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS riders Franco Morbidelli and Tom Luthi will be at Misano on September 9.
Franco Morbidelli:
“It’s very sad that the race was cancelled. We’re very sorry for the fans that spent the day waiting but safety is the most important part of racing. Now I’m looking forward to the Misano race. We tested there recently so I think we are ready to make good race.”
Thomas Luthi:
“It is a pity for the spectators but it was impossible to race in these conditions today. On the sighting lap to go to the grid I was aquaplaning with some big slides so it was too dangerous. The conditions did not change during the afternoon so for safety reasons the race was cancelled. The riders want to race but only in safe conditions.”
