Canet lodges season’s best qualifying for Spanish GP

Aron Canet came through Q1 at the last-minute to qualify 11th at the Circuito de Jerez Angel Nieto on Saturday, while Deniz Oncu was 19th.

In terms of weather, Saturday was a day of two halves in Andalusia. Morning rain and cool temperatures left the track fully wet for FP2. But the sun made an appearance over lunch time meaning qualifying was held in the dry and ambient temperatures of 23 degrees.

The atmosphere at the Circuito de Jerez Angel Nieto was electric throughout qualifying day, with the grandstands around the stadium section packed to capacity come the afternoon.

The fourth Moto2 race of the 2026 season gets underway at 12.15 local time on Sunday and will be held over 21 laps.

Aron Canet, 11th – 1’39.685

The conditions in FP2 allowed Aron to add to his experience of this year’s package in the rain. The Spaniard was competitive as he posted the 11th fastest time.

Aron left it late to jump up the order in Q1 as his final lap of the session was good enough for 3rd, just 0.05s off Ayumu Sasaki’s quickest time.

Thanks to some crucial set-up changes, the 26-year old felt more potential over a flying lap. Leaving it late again in Q2, Aron’s 11th place was his best Saturday performance of 2026 to date and a sign of his progression.

“We improved our feeling on the bike a lot today”

Aron’s comments:

“A good day! We improved our feeling on the bike a lot today. It was also the first time that we’ve made a significant step with the bike on a hot lap, and that really helped us today. This was super-important. As we know, in this category, when the times are so tight, it’s crucial to start as close to the front as possible. I’m not entirely happy to be eleventh – the goal is to be first. But I’m much happier about the improvements we’ve been making. The team’s been working really well and if we keep going like this, the results will come soon!”

Deniz Oncu, 19th – 1’40.052

Like his team-mate, Deniz took advantage of the morning rain to gain wet weather experience with his Boscoscuro chassis. He ended up in 13th.

The Turkish rider was showing plenty of his trademark aggression in Q1 as he sat among the top four places for most of the session.

But there would be late agony for the 22-year old as he was pushed back to 5th after the chequered flag was shown. He missed 4th – and a place in Q2 – by an agonising 0.005s.

“Once the lights go out we’ll get the head down and will keep pushing”

Deniz’s comments:

“We finished qualifying here in Jerez. I was aiming to do a lot better today. But, unfortunately, I was stuck in Q1 and couldn’t pass through to Q2 by the smallest margin. Anyway, my feeling on the bike has been much better this weekend and tomorrow there is a long race. Once the lights go out, we’ll get the head down and will be sure to keep working, to keep pushing. We’ll try to get into the point scoring places with the aim of scoring as many points as possible.”
