A record breaking year for Marc VDS
Gosselies, Belgium – 20 November 2014: The Marc VDS Racing Team, or Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS as they are now, dominated the 2014 Moto2 World Championship, with Tito Rabat crowned as the World Champion in Sepang and Mika Kallio securing second place in the Championship one race later in Valencia.
Rabat and Kallio also broke a few records this season, both individually and as a team. The statistics put together by Dr. Martin Raines, the official MotoGP statistician, make for impressive reading, so we thought we’d share.
635 – Total number of points by the Marc VDS team in 2014 – the highest ever single season points score by a two rider team in the history of the intermediate-class of Grand Prix racing.
346 – Tito Rabat finished the year with a total of 346 points in the Moto2 world championship, a new record highest points’ total in the intermediate-class of Grand Prix racing.
24 – Podium finishes for the Marc VDS team in 2014 – the most podium finishes ever by one team in a single season in the Moto2 class.
18 – Tito Rabat has finished in the top ten at all eighteen races in 2014, a record for most top ten finishes in a single season in the intermediate-class of Grand Prix racing.
18 – Marc VDS have had at least one rider on the podium at all of the eighteen races in 2014.
14 – Rabat finished on the podium fourteen times in 2014 equaling the record number of podiums in a season in the intermediate-class, set by Marc Marquez in 2012.
14 – The Marc VDS team riders have started from pole on 14 occasions during 2014 – the highest number of poles by a team in a single season in the intermediate-class of Grand Prix racing.
11 – Rabat has started from pole eleven times this year, a record number of poles in a single season in the intermediate-class of Grand Prix racing.
10 – Marc VDS have taken 10 race victories during the 2014 season – the greatest number of race victories in Moto2 in a single season by one team.
6 – On six occasions in 2014 both of the Marc VDS riders finished together on the podium.
4 – The Marc VDS team have finished one/two on four occasions during 2014.
2 – Marc VDS are the first team to take the top two places in the intermediate-class of Grand Prix racing since 2000, when Olivier Jacque won the championship from Shinya Nakano.
1 – Tito Rabat is the first rider to lead the Moto2 championship throughout the season.
1 – First time that a Belgium team has won a world championship title in the 66-year history of the world championship series.
