Arbolino and Salac look for big finish in Barcelona

The 2024 Moto2 World Championship comes to a conclusion this weekend with Elf Marc VDS Racing Team riders Tony Arbolino and Filip Salac eager for success in the season finale at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

  • Devastating floods that recently caused widespread damage to the city of Valencia and the surrounding area means round 20 has been moved from the Ricardo Tormo Circuit to the Montmelo track on the outskirts of Barcelona.
  • Preparations for the final round will start at 950am local time on Friday morning with the 40-minute Free Practice session ahead of the 21-lap race at 1215pm on Sunday afternoon.

  • The Italian is looking to finish 2024 with a flourish after scoring five top five finishes in the last nine rounds, which includes three podiums in Aragon and both Misano rounds.
  • When the World Championship visited the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya earlier this season, the 24-year-old battled his way through from 14th position on the grid to cross the line in ninth position.
  • Ninth back in May is Arbolino’s best result in four previous Moto2 starts in Barcelona and his best finish at Montmelo was a superb second in the 2020 Moto3 race from pole position.

“I want to say goodbye in the best possible way”

“I’m fully determined to finish the season in the best possible way and to say farewell to the Elf Marc VDS Racing Team before I begin a new chapter in my career in 2025. It is going to be a very emotional weekend for myself and my crew because we have formed a very close bond, and we’ve experienced some amazing moments together. I’ve so many good memories and I want to thank everybody in the Elf Marc VDS Racing Team for the support they’ve given me. It will be tough to say goodbye, so let’s hope we can have a strong finish together. I want the feeling of the podium back, so I’m motivated to do that as the best leaving present. I also want to send my support to those affected by the floods in Valencia. We are not racing in Valencia this weekend, but our hearts and strength will be there for the people of a beautiful city.”

/// FILIP SALAC

  • Salac is hoping to close his debut campaign with the Elf Marc VDS Racing Team on a high after scoring points in the previous nine races.
  • One of the Czech rider’s 13 points scoring finishes so far in 2024 came at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya when he fought his way through from 17th on the grid to finish 12th.
  • That 12th place finish back in May equalled Salac’s best result in Barcelona after also finished 12th in the Moto3 race back in 2020.

“I’m convinced we can do a good job”

“I can’t wait for the final round of the season and I’m happy to be racing at Barcelona because it is like a second home for me now. I’m convinced we can do a good job this weekend because at this time of the year the conditions are going to be pretty cool and already this season in cold temperatures I’ve been very competitive. So, let’s try and finish the season in the best possible way with a strong result. And I’d like to take this opportunity to send strength to the people of Valencia. I’ve had some great results there and it is a circuit and city I really enjoy visiting, so I look forward to be racing again in front of the amazing Valencia fans in the future.”
