Marquez and Mir leave Thai GP empty-handed

Alex Marquez went out of the race early from fourth place with teammate Joan Mir also failing to finish.

Heatwave weather at the Buriram track delivered little joy for Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS riders Alex Marquez and Joan Mir at round 15 of the Moto2 World Championship

Alex Marquez maintained his front-running pace in the warm-up with the third fastest time in final preparations for the 24 lap race. From second on the front row Marquez was part of a frantic opening two laps but was bumped back to sixth in heavy traffic. His brave fight for a podium challenge evaporated on lap six as Marquez charged back to fourth place but crashed out at turn five. He remains fifth in the standings with 126 points.

Joan Mir made an impressive move forward with the fifth fastest time in the warm-up but unfortunately was not able to display his real potential in the race. At turn three on the opening lap Mir slid out of the track and his Kalex machine was too damaged to continue. Mir is sixth in the standings with 124 points.

The next Moto2 World Championship race will be held from October 19 to 21 at the Twin Ring Motegi in Japan.

Alex Marquez: DNF

“It is a pity because I was at a good level all weekend with a fast rhythm”

“It was a shame about the race, I made mistake and lost the front and crashed. It is a pity because I was at a good level all weekend with a fast rhythm. I was in the top three in the opening laps but then got pushed wide and lost some positions but this is racing. We need to learn from today and go to Japan motivated to keep the same level as this weekend.

Joan Mir: DNF

“What a shame, it was my mistake”

“What a shame because in the warm-up I had really good feeling with the bike and the track. But in the race it was my mistake. In turn three I passed a lot of riders to try and go for the podium but the front closed and I crashed. I want to apologise to the other rider who came down with me, I’m not sure if was my fault or not.”
