Öncü fights through to eighth in heroic Silverstone comeback
Deniz Öncü recovered an astonishing 13 places at the British Grand Prix as he fought through to the top ten from 21st on the grid, while Aron Canet crashed out of 24th.
Much like the previous two days, conditions were close to perfect for racing on Sunday with the south of England bathed in sunshine with ambient temperatures touching 26 degrees.
The historic Silverstone Circuit hosted the twelfth Moto2 race of 2026. The 17-lap shootout kicked off at the earlier time of 11:15.
The legendary venue had a solid attendance with 43,085 fans coming through the turnstiles on Sunday.
Aron Canet, DNF
Aron’s strategy was clear. Starting from 26th, the Spaniard was determined to be aggressive on the first lap. He succeeded by gaining five places on the first circuit.
But Aron’s race came to an unfortunate end on the ninth lap when he crashed out of 24th at Turn 15. Thankfully the Spaniard was unharmed.
This result leaves Aron 23rd in the championship standings with 13.5 points.
“We have to keep believing that we can turn it around”
Aron’s comments:
“It’s a shame to end the weekend this way. I was really disappointed with how qualifying went yesterday. But the team made some changes to the bike for today and I was feeling more comfortable. I got a good start and made up some places. I wanted to keep pushing to close to gap to the group ahead while being careful with the rear tyre. But I started to lose some performance from lap four and kept losing feeling with the front. This recent run of results has been really tough for everyone. But we have to keep believing that we can turn it around soon.”
Deniz Öncü, 8th
Launching from 21st on the grid, Deniz made an amazing start to sit 13th and the close of the first lap.
The Turkish rider was inside the top ten by lap four and was soon scrapping with Dani Muñoz for seventh. He finished just a second off a top six place.
Deniz now sits 18th in the championship standings with 23.5 points.
“The step we did from Saturday to the race on Sunday was great”
Deniz’s comments:
“We finished the race here in England. We started in a very bad place because we’ve had a few problems over the course of the weekend. But we made a big improvement session by session. We could say the race wasn’t bad. It was a good performance. There are still some areas where we can improve. But the step we did from Saturday to the race on Sunday was great so we must take that going into the next race and build from here.”
